Version
A sequential identifier for a revision, so a document can cite which wording it was written against.
The type
What it is
Version turns a change into an event. Without it, a statement can be revised gradually by nobody in particular, and there is no moment at which anyone decided.
It is also what lets a decision taken last year be read against the version of the purpose that was in force at the time.
How it is recorded
A sequential number, with the date it took effect and who approved it.
Examples
- v3, effective 2026-01-01
- v1 — original
- v2 — superseded
The usual mistake
Overwriting rather than superseding. The previous version is often the more informative one.
