The positioning statement
The internal sentence that fixes the position: for whom, in what frame, what difference, on what basis — written for the organisation rather than for the market.
The idea
How it works
The statement is internal. Its job is to settle arguments about what the brand is claiming, not to be attractive — and confusing it with a tagline is the most common way the work is wasted.
It is used most at moments of pressure: a product decision, a campaign brief, a partnership, a large customer asking for something outside the position. If it is not present at those moments it is not doing anything.
Working with it
In practice
- 01
Keep all four parts
Target, frame, difference and reason to believe. Dropping the reason to believe is what turns it into a wish.
- 02
Do not write it to be liked
It is a decision record. Elegance is the tagline’s job and belongs to a different piece of work.
- 03
Use it at the decision, not at the review
A statement quoted only when assessing work already done has no influence on the work.
- 04
Change it deliberately and rarely
A position that moves with each planning cycle never accumulates. Revision should be an event with a record.

The components of the positioning statement
A component is something that exists afterwards which did not exist before — a deliverable or a mechanism, not an intention.
The positioning statement is internal. Writing it to be attractive turns it into a tagline and wastes the work.
The other modules in brand positioning
Frame of reference
What the customer compares the brand with — the category they file it under, which is frequently not the one the organisation would choose.
LearnPoints of difference
What the brand is meant to be believed better at, held alongside the parity points it has to be credibly adequate on to be considered at all.
LearnBrand architecture
How brands relate to one another where there is more than one — what carries the master brand, what stands alone, and what the customer is expected to connect.
