The horizon map
Current initiatives sorted into three horizons: defending the core, building what is next, and keeping options open.
The deliverable
What it is
Work aimed at three different distances cannot be judged by one standard. The map is what makes the three visible as distinct portfolios rather than one list.
The sorting is usually revealing on its own. Most organisations discover that almost everything sits in the first horizon.

The near horizon wins by default. If the balance has drifted toward it three reviews running, that is a decision nobody made.
The other components in growth horizons
The allocation
The agreed share of resource going to each horizon, and who signs off on changing it.
LearnMeasures per horizon
The distinct standard each horizon is judged by — return on the near one, learning on the middle, optionality on the far.
