Period

A span between two fixed points — a quarter, a financial year, a campaign window.

The type

What it is

A period is two dates that belong together. Splitting them into separate fields loses the fact that they define one span, and comparisons across periods become manual.

Periods are what make comparison possible at all. A measure without a period is a number with no context.

How it is recorded

A start date and an end date, both ISO 8601, stored as one value.

Examples

  • 2026-01-01 to 2026-03-31
  • A campaign window
  • A budget year

The usual mistake

Overlapping periods that are treated as sequential. It produces double counting that is very hard to spot later.
