Customer jobs and pains · The job statement · Element
The job
The progress the customer is trying to make, in a form that does not mention your product.
The part
What it is
Jobs are stable while solutions change. Stated correctly, a job outlives several generations of the products that serve it.
The test is substitution: if replacing your product with a rival, a spreadsheet or an assistant would still address the statement, it is a job.
The smallest level
The attributes it carries
Each attribute is one of the framework’s shared types. What a date is, and how it is written, is defined once for the whole model — the note here says what it means in this particular place.
Job
Written without naming your category, which is what keeps it a discovery rather than an assumption.
Statement shared typeJob type
Functional, social or emotional — most purchases involve more than one, and only the first is usually written down.
Choice shared typeCustomer segment
The same job is done differently by different segments; unattached, the statement averages them.
