The register

The list itself — every asset with an owner, a location and a category that leaves room for the things that were never bought.

The deliverable

What it is

The register is administrative and unglamorous, and everything else in the object depends on it existing and being roughly right.

Its categories are the decision that matters. Built around physical assets, the register cannot later be widened without being rebuilt.

What it is made of

Each element is a constituent part of the component. Follow one to see the attributes it carries.

  2. The ownership

Who is responsible for the asset, as a person rather than a department.

3 attributes: Owner · Primary user · Owning entity

  3. The location

Where the asset is, in terms specific enough to find it.

3 attributes: Location · Location verified · Status

Choose categories that accommodate intangibles from the outset. A physical-asset register cannot be widened later without a rebuild.
