Attribute · Time

Date

A single point in time: when something took effect, was decided, or is expected to land.

The type

What it is

Dates are what make a goal capable of being late, and a goal that cannot be late will not be prioritised. That is most of the reason the attribute matters.

They also anchor everything else to a moment. A decision without a date cannot be read against the pressures the organisation was under when it was taken.

How it is recorded

ISO 8601 — YYYY-MM-DD. Sorts chronologically without configuration and is unambiguous across locales.

Examples

  • 2026-01-01
  • The date a purpose took effect
  • When a milestone is due

The usual mistake

Recording “Q3” or “next year”. A vague date protects a goal from evaluation, which is why it is popular.
