Status
A position in a defined lifecycle, chosen from a fixed and agreed set.
The type
What it is
Status only works where the set of possible values is small, defined in advance, and mutually exclusive. Open-ended status fields become free text within a month.
The most useful sets include an ending — closed, cancelled, superseded — because without one nothing ever leaves the list.
How it is recorded
One value from a fixed set, with the set defined where the attribute is used.
Examples
- Proposed / agreed / in progress / closed
- Tolerated / being closed / not yet decided
The usual mistake
A lifecycle with no terminal state. The list only grows, and eventually nobody reads it.
