Layer transition map
What changes in the work at each step up the management layers, including the work that has to be handed on to others.
The deliverable
What it is
The Leadership Pipeline describes the move from leading oneself to leading others, then managers, a function and a business. At each step the time a leader spends, the skills they use and the work they value have to change.
The map records those changes for this organisation’s layers. Its practical use is at promotion, when a new leader can see what the role asks of them and what it asks them to stop doing.

At every promotion, name the work the person must stop doing. It is the part of the transition that is seldom said and most often explains why one stalls.
